The gelly roll gel ink formula was first launched by Sakura in the 1980s. In the late 1970s, several big brands of rollerball manufacturers used a water-based ink and ballpoint pen which used oil-based ink. The Sakura pen corporation first time successfully developed a gel-based ink. Since then, Sakura was recognised as the world's first gel pen.
